October 2, 2004 Deer Creek Speedway Classic Dwarf Report by Bill Nelson

It is hard to believe that Deer Creek Speedway has put its final show of the 2004 racing season in the books.  With 152 cars checking into the pit area on the final night of the season a lot of heavy hitters made their journey to the track.  National point runners Ryan Aho in the Super Stocks, Dan Gullikson and Travis Krause in the street stocks you knew the night was going to be exciting and it did not disappoint.

With the 5:00 start time the show clicked off in good order with the heat races getting over about 7:30 which included two red flags for incidents on the track slowing down the track.  The final checkers waved just before ten o’clock with many drivers hanging around afterwards to discuss the years racing activities.

A few quick highlights of the night included some classic dwarf cars visiting from other states.  With eight dwarf cars checking in from southern Iowa and three drivers making the long haul up from Nebraska to join in the racing action making a season high car count of 27 dwarf cars on hand.  A great field of 22 WISSOTA Late models were also on hand with a few first time visitors testing out the track.

After the racing action many drivers and fans moved inside to the beer garden where the cd player was hooked up for the night with everyone enjoying the music and conversations from the past racing season.  The all-girl Herrick pit crew was busy dancing up a storm along with many of the wives and girl friends of the drivers joining them on the dance floor.  Bob Timm had his groove on also mixing it up with the girls as everyone enjoyed the night.  Justin Queensland was busy mixing the cd’s up for the night after a night in the flagstand and only had to pull the black flag out once during the post race activities as someone noticed the full moon rising over Deer Creek.  It was a great time and many, many incriminating pictures were taken throughout the night to be used during the awards banquet.

With many drivers visiting from neighboring states a full field of Classic Dwarf cars took the green flag.  Matt Aarsvold took the early lead with Rick Utley in second.  On the second lap Brian Kiehne took the second spot away and worked to track down the leader.  With thirteen to go Kiehne took the lead as Randy Rudolf moved into a battle with Aarsvold for second.  With eleven to go Rudolf lost the handle in two bringing out the caution flag.  Drew Jech used the restart to his advantage and moved into the second spot and put pressure on Kiehne for the lead.  Troy Hudson was on the move as he D. Jech, Utley and Jeff Jech had a great battle for the last five laps with Hudson taking the second spot by a car length at the line.
